Welcome to a slice of life in little Kaiwaka. The purpose of this blog is to help us keep in touch with friends and family more often, even if it is less personal than an individual email.
28 August 2009
The weather’s still mental but spring is oh so close. The trees and grass are slowly greening and electrical storms are winding up the dogs and playing havoc with our sleep patterns.
An ex-city chick and her husband-to-be moved to a 10-acre lifestyle block in Kaiwaka, New Zealand in 2006. This is a record of their experiences as they attempt to live the 'Good Life' and learn to become small farmers.
In the beginning there was just a block of land and then a shed and plenty of time to email friends and family. These days there's also a house and a menagerie of animals and quite frankly, stuff all time to email anyone.
I am in danger of being one of those people who just disappears out of people's lives, becoming little more than a memory in the minds of friends and family. Finally out of desperation I am resorting to something I assumed only sad gits resorted to - a blog. Surely blogs are only written by vain people who want fame?
What the hell is a blog anyway? I mean, let's face it, as a 30-something year old female trying to live 'The Good Life', modern technology is not high on my list of priorities. Friends and family have tried to introduce me to Facebook but I got so hopelessly confused by the whole process and forgot my password so many times that I gave up on it after 2 weeks.
No way was I going to read anyone's blog let alone write one.
And suddenly, as life on the block becomes busier I realise I just don't have the time to email friends and family. Do I plant a tree or email a friend? Do I prune the fruit trees or email a friend? Do I scrubcut the driveway or email a friend?
Invariably the property wins out most of the time. So here I am resorting to desperate measures in an effort to try stay in touch, even if it is in a somewaht impersonal way.
Keeping a blog seems a little scary but I'm prepared to step into the unknown if it means we don't lose touch. Please forgive my infrequent emails. I do hope you will check in from time to time just to see what we're up to and maybe you might even feel like passing comment or offering advice.
So here you have it - our blog.
My aim is to update this at least fortnightly with weekly goings on. I can't promise it will always be interesting but then it's for me as much as you as I need a good way of recording events on the block. At some point, when age catches up with me, my joints give out and I'm confined to small home on a small level plot of land, I'd like to be able to look back and say "Wow, I really did do something wonderful with my life".
